Chapter 7

Christine was about to explode. For three years she had been in the dark about what happened to her wife, despite having everything to her disposal to find out. It must have been frustrating for her that she was able to help all those people and she had no idea what happened to the woman she was married to.

“Jessica! Tell me right now!”

“Do you think you should be shouting at me like that? You need to calm down and let us talk about it.”

“Are you going to use this to blackmail me?” she asked and I forgave her instantly because clearly, it was anxiety speaking.

“For what in return?”

“For...for…”

“Yea. Please sit down and be calm or I am not saying a word.”

She did as I said and waited patiently for me to begin but I couldn’t tell her what happened.

“I am calm.”

“What do you want to know.”

“Everything.”

“I am trying to protect you, Chris. And for that reason, I can’t tell you everything. Please just allow me to do what is right for you.”

“How do you know what is right for me? How do you know what it would take for me to heal?”

“Not this.”

“I want to know.”

“What is most important to you? What has bothered you the most about her death?”

“If it was my fault. You know...if I arrested someone or sent someone to prison and they used her as revenge.”

I took a deep breath because I never imagined that I would be in this position. I was depending on this woman to give me some sort of life, to save me from being completely lost, yet here I was having to decide if I hold this information back at the risk of her hating me. Yet, I knew she would be devastated, but I had an obligation to tell her the truth.

“It was not your fault,” I said looking into her eyes for her to see the truth. “Monica’s death was not as a result of anything you did.”

She believed me and sighed. I could see most of the weight lifting off her shoulders and I knew she had suffered for a long time with the possibility that it was her fault.

“How did she die?”

“Are you testing me or you really don’t know?”

“I really don’t know.”

“She was strangled. Wasn’t an autopsy done?”

“Wait...can’t you see how her body was found?”

“No. I can’t see beyond the victim’s experience. The last thing they experienced is where I am taken from, in reverse.”

“Oh. Well, her skeletal remains were removed from the lake. The autopsy looked for blunt force trauma and found nothing.”

“Oh my God...so she was missing for a while?”

“Yes. Five months, two weeks, four days. Someone was experimenting on deep water fishing and found her remains. Dental record proved it was her.”

“I’m sorry,” was all I could say.

“Could you see who strangled her?” she asked with her voice shaking.

“Yes.”

“Who?” she got up and started to cry.

“Chris...please…”

“Who?!”

“A man!”

“Do I know him?”

“I don’t know.”

“You are lying!”

“I’m not!”

“Then who is he?”

“Her lover!”

The force of my words threw her back.
